HP Z420 QuickSpecs:
lotek chapra : I'm running a z420 with mdadm raid 5 as my boot. Shits a beast still.
Elan Cheziyan : What is the best UPS for this workstation ? I am using 1100 VA but still having random shutdown problems while working from home but it works flawlessly while working in office.
Giotronics : underrated channel. great content!
S Sergeant : I just bought a refurbished one of these. it came with 8gb of ram. I had an issue with it not booting so I moved ram from slot 1 to slot 6 and that seemed to fix the problem. I haven't tried putting in back in slot 2. I also seem to have an issue with it choking when I put more than one external USB powered SSD drive. would that be a ram issue? I have not been able to determine the model of the MB. it doesn't seem to be listed on the board. I'd thought about upgrading the CPU but not sure if I can.

I think it has a 600 watt PS but it's really hard to see.
Skill Skull : sir mere pas yahi system ha

HP Z420 Workstation features overview and teardown

Video guide I did going over major features and upgrade capability of an HP z420 workstation
David : This is the single best video explaining everything about the Z420. I've came back to watch this time and again for accurate info when upgrading mine. Everything you said here is 100 true
The Rambling Ranter : I have a z420 with e5 1620 32gb ram and an Nvidia Quadro 4000m 8gb video card and it’s a beast for photo and video editing. Works great. Windows 10 and all my adobe software. Only issue is no spaces for extra fans but I dremeled the side panel and added a couple fans.
Steve Cooksley : That's reassuring to know that I bought eight of these over six years ago for my department and they are still pretty powerful. Does anyone know if I can run P4000 GPUs in these? HP obviously doesn't spec them officially but the Quadro 2000s I have in these are getting pretty old and tired now.
George Bell : Very good review. I like how honest and genuine you come off in this review and it answers my questions about the machine. I'm about to buy one off of eBay for $286.
pudding! : These are still pretty decent even nowadays, I'm about to upgrade my main workstation to one of these with either a 2690 V2 or a 2697 V2, 64gb ram and a load of ssds

HP Z420 Workstation Review & Overview | Memory Install Tips | How to Configure HPE System | Gaming

HP Z420 Workstation | We will provide a general overview of the Z420 and a deeper dive into the various memory options such as sizes, speeds and compatible types of RAM. In this video, learn more about the memory and CPUs compatible with the HP Z420 Workstation. This is a desktop form factor rocking server components on the inside. You can use the HP Z420 as home office desktop or a gaming PC. Sit back and enjoy the video!

Let's begin with memory. HP's Z420 is a tower workstation running on server memory modules to maximize the overall performance. This system utilizes DDR3 memory and there are eight DIMM slots. There are three types of memory compatible with the HP Z420: ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM), ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). You have a few options as far as speeds and sizes for your HP Z420. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Size options depend on type of memory. ECC Registered and Load Reduced memory support higher capacities including: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. the max memory configuration is 256GB (8 x 32GB) DDR3 1866MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory or 256GB (8 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Registered server memory. ECC Unbuffered only supports 1GB 2GB 4GB or 8GB. Unfortunately there are no 16GB DDR3 ECC Unbuffered modules. They were never invented. This means the max configuration for HP Z420 is 64GB via (8 x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900E with ECC Unbuffered 1866MHz Server Memory. There are 4 Memory Channels total. 2 Memory channels per CPU. Two DIMM slots per memory channel. Each channel is labeled and color coded by HP. Normally the white slot is the 1st slot... however with the Z420 the first slot of each channel is the black DIMM slot. If you were only using 2 or 4 DIMMs, then the proper configuration would be to load all the DIMMs in the black slots. That way all your DIMMs are at the start of each memory channel, which will essentially provide an even distribution. You will not overload one channel and will spread the load around evenly which maximizes performance. We will discuss in more depth in this video and physically load the DIMMs inside our HP Z420 as a helpful guide.

Mohawk In Belgium : Hello, will this detect plain SATA drives or are they only SAAS drives?
LordJorgemort : i have this exact same pc, but my case its really beat up, i want to migrate to a new case, do you know if any ATX case can fit, or do you have a specific case you could recommend?
Syahid : Hello, my HP Z420 currently has 2x2GB PC3L-12800E rams inside, and I thought of buying extra ram since 4 gigabytes isn't enough for me. So I went and did some research but the HP website which has the specification of the workstation says DDR3, UDIMM(Unbuffered), ECC are supported. Doesn't that mean the one I have is basically unbuffered ECC? How does a registered ECC work on it if the HP website says unbuffered only? Or is it possible for me install a reg ECC DIMM if I remove the two unbuffered ECC DIMMS. I need some help since I really plan to install enough RAM here. The CPU that came with this workstation is the Xeon E5-1620 v1 which as far as I know has maximum memory support of 1600MHz
S Sergeant : where do I find the part# short of taking the heat sink off over the CPU - I can't find it. is there a way to scan it? I do have ram questions. It wouldn't boot so I moved the stick in 1 over to the left next to #6 and then it was fine. not sure why that is?

it currently only has 2x4 (total 8). is there a problem if I add 2x8's.? I looked on your site and you don't offer 4gb sticks. I'm trying to figure out how to add ram or WHAT to add. I'm not a gamer.
